“A car with 662 horsepower was too civil, I need something dangerous .” Yeah, sure, whatever man. All I can say is that if you consider the fact because a car is driveable that it needs more power, then I think your priorities are in the wrong place. Can’t wait for the articles saying “X car is an undriveable mess because it has too much power and not enough grip!”

Im firmly in the camp that these pony car HP wars are all about crotch stuffing and pissing matches but I realize that’s not the “jalop” opinion. 6lbs/hp...MAYBE 5 is about where we are are with tire tech these days.

It’s at the point where if I were to buy a new muscle/pony car, I’d probably just go for a four-cylinder or V6. Because not only do the V8s make a lot of power, hot damn are they expensive.

Im not pony car demo material, but the mid range performance model suites me nicely in most cases. an SS 1le is all the car I really want in terms of performance.

I couldn’t agree more. Performance doesn’t necessarily mean gobs and gobs of horsepower. There’s more to it than that. I don’t have to have a car with a million horsepower. I want one that puts a smile on my face when I drive it. Nothing more, nothing less. I’ve seriously considered an SS or a Stinger for my next car because it would give me everything that I need. Also, at what point is the horsepower war going to stop? At some point they are going to reach a certain limit and there will be no more to give.

I was in my friend’s ML 63 the other day, he was complaining how expensive his parts were (brakes, in particular, which he was due for), and how it was a gas guzzler. I told him if these were his concerns he shouldn’t have bought it out at the end of the lease, and should’ve downgraded something else. Then he tells me how he needs more horsepower, it was either lease a new ML 550 or buy out the 63, and has to be the higher end model.

I promptly pointed to the ML 350 Bluetec that was the same colour as his, across the other lane, also stuck in downtown traffic on the Gardiner.

I like cars that reward hard driving, sweet handling cars, eager cars that often have fairly low horsepower figures.

But I also enjoy some of these cars where excess is the aim. And with excess, there’s never enough.

You know why they keep doing it? It sells the less powerful ones in higher numbers. How many people go to the Ford house to see/sit in the GT500 and walk out with a 4 cyl or gasp something else even non Mustang related? A lot. It generates foot traffic
